Diet Pills For Women
People from all walks of life may eventually find themselves in situation where weight loss becomes great challenge. People who are overweight are generally quite conscious about it, even if they seem not to care. Although both men and women are in the same boat, it is an undeniable fact that women are more burdened to always look slim, young and pretty. Being overweight can really crush someone’s self esteem, and many women find that if they are not happy with their physique they lose the confidence to socialise.
So, the big question is how to effectively lose the weight. Exercise and low fat diets are the traditional remedies of course, but if this was all as easy as it sounds then there would be a lot more slim, trim and fit people walking the streets! Over the past few years, taking diet pills has become a very popular solution for women who are trying to lose weight. Do diet pills really work, and are they a safe, long term option? As with any health topic, the answers are never simple. However, enough research has been conducted for us to say that some diet pills are quite a powerful weight loss tool that can be safely used by women or men.
Before we get into the discussion on types and brands of diet pills, we need to talk about what these pills are NOT about.
1. Diet pills are NOT a magic solution to weight loss. They will not fix health problems which are not directly related to obesity. Some people get into these medications to improve their general health – this is not a good move. In fact, you need to be in reasonably good health before taking diet pills, in case you suffer unlikely side effects like diarrhea or vomiting.
2. You cannot continue an unhealthy lifestyle and expect a diet product to fix it for you. If your obesity problem is directly related to overeating or gorging yourself on sugary fast foods, or you suffer a compulsive eating disorder, you need to address this first. Taking diet pills might help you shed some weight, but the idea is to get rid of it and keep it off – and this won’t work if you keep eating unhealthily, or simply too much.
3. Fitness and well being stem from regular exercise. Exercise unfortunately doesn’t come in pill form yet…and these babies won’t build strength or endurance. You really need to be prepared to combine an exercise routine with your supplements.
Maybe this stuff sounds obvious, but it is not a joke – if you do some research you will find plenty of people posting and complaining on weight loss and diet forums. That they haven’t found any improvement in their fitness, that they have put weight straight back on, that they still feel low on energy…Diet pills do most definitely work, but it is important that we see them for what they are – a tool to help us lose weight, not do everything for us.
Although all weight control and weight loss drugs and supplements are commonly thrown together and referred to as diet pills, there are several distinct types which you need to understand.
Firstly, there are appetite suppressants. These are designed to catch the problem off before it starts, by encouraging you to eat less. Less goes in, less energy to store as fat and need to burn off. An appetite suppressant is known as an anorectic in the medical world, and at present one of the most widely used ones is called Rimonabant. This suppressant is sold under the market names, Remonabent, Riobant, and Slimona. Appetite suppressants are good for people who believe that their main problem is that they crave foods and snacks.
The second broad group of weight loss drugs are those that increase metabolic rate, basically causing you to burn more energy all day long. There are many natural products that claim to increase your metabolic rate, such as Taurine, and even good old caffeine. Just be aware that certain energy drinks or products that claim to help you expend more energy may in fact be so heavily laced with sugar that they provide no real net gain.
Thirdly and finally, there are diet pills that inhibit the uptake of certain compounds in your food – generally fats and sugars. Orlistat is a prescription drug (this means you will need to see a doctor to obtain it) which is currently popular in the USA. It is mainly sold under the trade name Xenical, and works basically by lowering fat absorption in the intestine. At present this type of weight loss pill is proving to be the most effective, for most people.
Before you make any hard and fast decisions, it may well be worth considering a natural approach. Natural weight loss supplements do not work for everybody, but they are generally safer and have fewer side effects. Natural or herbal diet pills are also fairly cheap when compared to prescription items, so this might be worth a try. There are also many foods which have appetite suppressant properties – apples, oatmeal (think porridge) and green tea are just a few that many people swear by.
Just remember that losing weight is not a quick process, and that you need to treat your body as gently as possible. Women who have been pregnant or anyone who has been ill may need to accept that weight loss will occur quite slowly, but take heart: you WILL lose the weight when your body is ready. If there is one thing you take from reading this, let it be that a healthy diet and lifestyle will eventually be what make you feel and look great. Yes, diet pills can help you get there, but you still need the determination to keep up regular exercise and eat well.
Finally, seek good medical advice. Most general practitioners have a basic understanding of weight control drugs and diet pills, and the authority to prescribe them, but you may find that a nutritionist or doctor who specializes in weight loss can give you a much better understanding of the various products available, how to use them, and what potential side effects you may expect.
How do diet pills work?
Diet pills are now being use by millions of people around the world who desperately want to lose weight. There are countless different brands and forms of weight loss products on the market and billions of dollars are being pumped into the diet industry.
Diet pills are seen to be a magic solution for fast and easy weight loss by many people, rather than as a supplement or tool. If you are considering using one of the many products to help you achieve your optimum weight, you need to understand that it will still eventually boil down to you engaging in exercise and eating good, wholesome food. If you are prepared to accept this, then diet pills just might help you get there a bit faster.
Before you start taking anything, you might want to know a bit more about how these products work. Here is a brief plain English discussion about how different diet pills work.
1. Appetite suppressant diet pills work by making you feel full or satisfied, even if you have eaten less than you normally would. These pills are great in the sense that they are addressing the problem before it arises. If you eat less you have less energy to use up, and potentially deposit as fat on your hips, stomach and legs. Chemically this process is fairly complicated, but basically it works by sending signals to your brain in the form of hormonal messages that say “I’ve had enough!”. The effect is simply that full, satisfied feeling you get when you have finished your meal – just that you will get it earlier, and find yourself needing smaller servings of food.
2. Metabolic boosters or stimulators work by actually causing your body to burn more energy. You will find that most of these diet pills are natural products, often containing similar ingredients to popular energy drinks. Compounds like caffeine and Taurine give you more energy for short to medium periods, and some people find that taking these supplements can significantly help them burn off calories. Boosting your metabolism simply means that you burn more energy, because your heart, muscles, and other organs are working harder than usual.
3. Fat blocker and carb-blocker diet pills, as the name suggests, work by inhibiting the uptake of certain food compounds. Like appetite suppressants, these drugs work by sending messages to key organs, telling them what to do and what not to do. The end result is basically that fats and/ or carbohydrates are not absorbed through the intestinal wall, and pass out of the body again. It’s a good system – you still get to eat what you want, and the fat literally doesn’t stick. Just remember that you can’t rely on this forever…you still need to eventually adjust your diet and come off the diet pills.
Of course this is a non technical explanation of how weight loss medication works. If you feel like delving deeper it really is a fascinating subject, although most people will be satisfied knowing that their choice of product in safe and effective.
At this point in time Xenical is probably one of the most popular diet pills available, although it is a prescription only item. Xenical is a powerful appetite suppressant, and seems to work very well for most people who try it.
Just remember that good food and gentle exercise is never wasted, and that this is what will really make you feel and look your best. Many people claim that eating fresh fruit early in the day helps suppress appetite as well as artificial products do – and green tea is said to have similar effects. Don’t be shy to try herbal and natural products before prescription drugs, as these are generally quite affordable and safe for people of all ages.
Why should I use diet pills?
Being overweight can create a lot of unnecessary health problems. It can lead to serious conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular or heart disease, and indirectly to depression and low self esteem. Diet pills are now considered a realistic option for people who have difficulty in losing weight, and may offer hope to those who have tried and failed with more traditional methods.
Did you know that obesity is now defined as a chronic disorder, and is seen as one of the biggest threats to a persons life prospects? Losing excess weight has got to be on your too do list, no matter how busy you think you are. For you own welfare and for those who depend on you, you need to do everything you can to get in shape.
Before we talk about diet pills and how they can help, you need to understand that this is not some miracle cure-all that will make you magically happy and healthy. Diet pills are NOT a health solution in the long run, and you will still eventually need to develop an exercise routine and address your day to day nutrition. Just remember, diet pills are NOT the solution if you –
a) Have a compulsive eating disorder
b) If you don’t intend to change your lifestyle at all to include exercise
c) Are not prepared to eat healthier foods
d) If your obesity is the result of another medical condition such as diabetes*
*Note there is at least one type of medication that may be suitable for diabetes patients. Read about diet pills suitable for diabetes patients by following the link.
To be brutally honest, there is only one single possible reason that anybody should consider using diet pills. That reason is that you have tried traditional weight control methods – exercise and intelligent diets. By “intelligent” diets we mean nutrition programs that are approved and endorsed by a medical practitioner or another health professional, and not celebrity endorsed garbage like the maple syrup diet (made famous by Beyonce, who allegedly lost 10 pounds over 7 days by consuming nothing but maple syrup, water, and crackers). For your own well being, you need to try losing weight naturally first – it is safer, and cheaper too.
When this fails, however, its time to look at alternatives. This is where diet pills can really help you. Do they work? Yes they do, about 90% of the time. You are good candidate for success if you are:
a) in reasonably good health
b) Not taking any other drugs at present, and
c) Are capable of following directions.
Many people fall down simply because they fail to follow the basic instructions given with their diet pills and this is probably where the 10% failure rate comes from. A good example are appetite suppressant medications such as Xenical, whose job it is to make you feel less hungry so you eat less (medically this is known as an anorectic). Commonly you take these pills three (3) times daily and eat light meals to effectively keep down your appetite all day. Yet have a look on weight loss forums, how many people are complaining that they take Xenical (or similar) every day before breakfast, then eat nothing at all, and (surprise surprise) are ravenous by lunch time. The result is that they have to overeat just to compensate, which totally defeats the purpose of the diet pills you have just paid good money for. Diet pills can and do work wonderfully, but you need to do what the doctor tells you!
So don’t be afraid to try weight control pills, if used properly they can help you achieve your weight loss goals and help you look and feel good again. But be patient with your body. Even with the help of supplements it can take weeks before you see any improvement. Keep your chin up though – every step you take, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is still one step in the right direction.
